Assault of an Officer at Parliament House, Victoria

Tonight, at the front of Parliament House, a Protective Security Officer
was assaulted in the course of his duties.

The officer was attended to by medical officers and has been taken to

The thoughts of the Victorian Parliament are with the officer, his family
and friends, and his colleagues.

In any circumstance, an assault on a Victoria Police Officer is
completely unacceptable and deeply concerning.

Victoria Police will conduct a thorough investigation into this serious
incident. The Premier and Deputy Premier are receiving regular briefings
from Victoria Police on this incident.

Victoria Police have issued the statement below:

Protective Services Officer assaulted

A Protective Services Officer has been seriously assaulted whilst on
patrol near Parliament House earlier this evening.

Police believe that the PSO was struck several times to the head with a
weapon before the offender took his firearm and fled through the Fitzroy

A short time later police were advised that a man had allegedly shot
himself in the vicinity of Charles and Wellington streets in Jolimont

The man died at the scene and the PSO has been conveyed to the Royal
Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries
